CURRENT EFFORTS

FOCUS: URBAN EXISTENTIA

Current efforts examine various aspects of inhabitance: correlations between the body and physical structures ... how existence might be trapped and portrayed through erosion of a surface with the body thereon. Utilizing Freud's libidinal model, the body is feminine, the structure masculine. The objective is to mate their similarities -- capture their interaction through the portrayal of their fluidity. By reflecting the currents flowing between the body (graffiti) and the structure (surface), it becomes possible to highlight the movement between those objects. These efforts measure those elements as they are increased and diminished, distributed and displaced ... examine how they become fixed ... depict how the connection is abandoned through erosion. The resulting works speak to the stains that time and human existence leave on a structure and attempt to harness that reciprocal relationship. They also reflect what one sees through urban inhabitance as a viewer: its endless circulation and visual rhythm.

"Nude Surface" (August, 2006)
Dissolved Chalk Pastels & Acrylic on Canvas
(This piece was derived from a foto of a nude stenciled onto a surface in Berlin. She's the one that started the whole business ... if you don't like it, blame her. Stencil artist unknown.)

"Sunny One" (May, 2007)
Oil on Paper and Canvas Board
(This study examines the behavior of paper and the effects of exposure to humidity [think: outdoor advertisements]).

Detail from "Klimt/Plaster/Vienna" (September, 2006)
Quad - Acrylic on Canvas
(Working from Klimt's drawings is a necessary evil for learning how to work the figure ... see exactly how it behaves as theorectical layers of urban grit are placed upon and removed by weathering.)

Image:

"PLE" (October, 2006)
Acrylic and Marker on Canvas
(This work is based on a photograph of a London surface ... the little thief on the left was what caught my eye. Upon further examination, there appeared to be some message that connected the work of the different taggers. Connection and artists unknown.)

"From France" (May, 2007)
Oil on Paper and Canvas Board
(More paper studies with water and color washing.)

Image:

"Klimt/Study/Clay" (October, 2006)
Oil on Linen
(Ditto from above ... only this time working with oil ... depicting the surface underneath of Klimt's figure.)

"LAST" (May, 2007)
Mixed Media
(This study holds a huge leap for surface building (plaster) and stickers removed from surfaces in Soho after lunching with a fine friend. With any luck it will end my obsession with LL, but further studies on the effects of popular culture remain on the list. That said, this surface speaks to some degree to the phenomenon of celebrity ... and all of those things that are temporary.)

"PINK" (2007)

This work contains one of the first bra studies constructed during my months in Naples, Florida. 2008 will see further studies of this object including an exploration of fabrics and the concept of the bra filled with air.

"MIXED AND TRICKY" (2007)
Mixed Media

The style of this piece was derived from days at Kunsthaus Tacheles. As the house was (is) open to the public 24/7, its interior was constantly subjected to the art of its visitors. Taggers and sprayers, tourists with stickers and roaming purveyors of outdoor advertising used the walls to promote their respective agendas and mark their presence. The edges are uneven to reflect the habits of the tourists who constantly tried to tear the works from the walls. What was left was a reflection of time and human impact on the structure. It is constructed from actual paper removed from the streets of Berlin, images and words that I am fond of and a stencil that was reconstructed from a graffiti wall in Paris.
